Course Objective

This course deals with the approaches of prominent Turkish intellectuals to interrelations between religion, society and culture in Türkiye such as Ahmet Cevdet Paşa, Ziya Gökalp, Prens Sabahattin, Sait Halim Paşa, Ahmet Rıza Bey, Mehmet Izzet, Hilmi Ziya Ülken, Nurettin Topçu, Şerif Mardin, Peyami Safa, Erol Güngör, Sabri Ülgener, I. H.Baltacıoğlu, M. E. Erişirgil, Niyazi Berkes, and Cemil Meriç. It examines periods and mentality patterns, sources of intellectual inspiration, and political and intellectual debates from different aspects through the portraits of prominent intellectuals who have focused on social and religious issues.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understands the development of the history of Turkish Thought in the Republic era.
2   Explains the place of religion among the political and intellectual debates in the Turkish Republic era.
3   Evaluates the different approaches of Turkish thinkers on religion and society.
4   Learns how Turkish intellectuals' views on religious life are shaped from which intellectual sources.
5   Interprets how the conceptual / theoretical frameworks of our thinkers affect and shape the Turkish socio-cultural structure and intellectual life.
