Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the field of humanitarian law and to give information about the rules to be applied in international or non-international armed conflicts and to discuss the extent to which artificial intelligence technologies used in conflicts are compatible with humanitarian law rules.

1   To be able to explain when International Humanitarian Law is applicable
2   To be able to explain the basic principles of International Humanitarian Law
3   To be able to apply the rules of International Humanitarian Law to concrete situations
4   To be able to explain the obligations arising from International Humanitarian Law
5   To be able to evaluate the use of artificial intelligence tools within the scope of International Humanitarian Law rules

5 Basic principles of the law of war
6 Protected persons
7 Types of armed conflict and some distinctions of the law of war
8 Ensuring compliance with humanitarian law rules
9 Concept of Artificial Intelligence
10 The use of artificial intelligence in armed conflicts
11 Artificial intelligence tools and principles to be followed in armed conflicts
12 War Crimes, International Criminal Law and Humanitarian Law
13 Sanctions that can be applied in case of violation of humanitarian law and remedies against perpetrators
14 Midterm exam
