Course Objective

A better understanding of Roman Private Law, which is at the base of Continental European Legal Systems, depends on understanding the period that created the reason for these rules. The political history of the Roman State, which transformed from a city-state into a central empire, and its associated doctrines also constitute the subject of Roman Public Law. By taking the "Introduction to Roman Public Law" elective course, the student will understand the social structure and political periods that prepared the rules in Roman Private Law, which is the basis of today's legal system. Thus, they will have a better understanding of the basis of today's legal rules.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to learn the political periods created by the establishment of Rome, which turned into an empire, the developments and the conflicts in the society.
2   To be able to distinguish the creative and effective sources of law in different political periods of the Roman state.
3   To be able to master the reasons that prepared the end of the different political periods of the Roman State and the reasons for the beginning of the new political periods.
4   To be able to distinguish which rules have emerged that affect legal life with the change of the Roman State, which holds different cultures together and is considered the pioneer of the modern state.
5   Being able to learn how each new political period meets the changing new social needs by learning the political history that is the subject of Roman Public Law.
6   To be able to comprehend the changing political structure of the Roman State with its doctrines and to gain the ability to understand the social structure and relations that lay the groundwork for Roman Private Law.

1 Establishment of the Roman City-State, Kingdom Period, Roman society and political structure.
2 Republic period, political organs, conflicts in society
3 Cursus Honorum
4 Social conflicts in the Republican Period and the situation of the plebs afterwards, the reasons that prepared the end of the Republic Period.
5 Defenders of the republican regime and the dictators against it.
6 Political organs of the Augustan Era and the First Imperial Period
7 The Provinces and the Peace of Rome (Pax Romana)
8 Creative and enforceable sources of Roman law
9 Midterm Exam
10 Midterm Exam
11 The importance of the First Imperial Period in terms of law and the reasons that prepared the end of this period.
12 The Last Imperial Period and its political organs
13 The activities of the emperors in the last imperial period.
14 Social structure of the Last Imperial Period and its end
15 Evaluation of the contributions of the Roman Empire to the world, especially in law.
