Course Objective

The objective of this course is to define discourse and deal with the basic concepts and approaches relating discourse. To this end, it is aimed that students comprehend the concept of text, formal and functional aspects of communication, discourse connectors, specific discourse types, and processes of the production, perception, and comprehension of discourse.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   the student is expected to be able to define the basic concepts such as discourse, text, metaphor, and context.
2   the student is expected to be able to explain the basic concepts used in the analysis of discourse with examples.
3   the student is expected to be able to discuss from what different aspects a discourse fragment can be analyzed.
4   the student is expected to be able to identify different discourse types.
5   the student is expected to be able to examine and discuss how different approaches (stylistic, psycholinguistic, sociolingistic) can be used in discourse analysis.

5 Proposition, macrostructure, superstructure
6 Discourse connectors: discourse relations, anaphora, deixis
7 Mid-term exam
8 Discourse fragmentes and topic
9 Topic and the representation or discourse content
10 Production of discourse: "staging" and the representation of discourse content
11 Production of discourse: information structure (given and new information) Halliday s aprroach of information structure
12 Coherence in the production of discourse: mental models, schema, frame, scenerio, plan
13 Specific discourse types: verbal interaction and transcription models
14 Specific discourse types: narrative texts and analyzing them using different approaches.
15 Specific discourse types: argumentative texts and analyzing them using different approaches; persuasion.
16 Final exam

Learning outcomes 1-5 will be evaluated via the assignments and the questions asked in the mid-term and final exams.
