Course Objective

The objective of this course is to improve awareness on the relation between language and culture making use of the related theories and approaches such as Sapir-Whorfian Hypothesis, speech-acts, ethnography of communication; and concepts which demonstrate different characteristics in different languages and cultures such as kinship terms, colour terms, metonomy, metaphor, gender related linguistic features, and discourse patterns..

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   the student is expected to able to define the basic concepts related to language and culture (Ethnolinguistics)
2   the student is expected to able to explain the relation between language and culture
3   the student is expected to able to explain the contribution of pragmatic theories and methods to revealing the relationship between language and culture
4   the student is expected to able to compare and contrast the difference between different languages and cultures in terms of specific ethnolinguistic concepts.
5   the student is expected to able to evaluate and criticize a study on the relation between language and culture.
6   the student is expected to able to draw conclusions judging from findings on the relation between language and culture.
