Course Objective

The objective of this course is to deal with the relation between language and society within the contexts such as language variety, dialect, accent, pidgin, creole, diglossia, bilungalism, multilingualism, social stratification, class, ethnicity, code-mixing, code-switching, language planning, language reform, ideology, and social power and have the students comprehend the relation said.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   the student is expected to be able to define the basic concepts relating sociolinguistics
2   the student is expected to be able to explain the relation between language and society thoroughly
3   the student is expected to explain data collection methods in sociolinguistics.
4   the student is expected to be able to compare and contrast the relationship between language and social class, ethnicity, social stratification and such.
5   the student is expected to be able to commenting on and criticizing a sociolinguistic research
6   the student is expected to be able to draw conclusions making use of the findings about the relation between language and society

1 The relation between language and society. Domains of socioliguistics. The disciplines related to socioliguistics .
2 Language choice in multi lingual societies: Diglossia and Heteroglossia
3 Language choice in multi lingual societies: Code-swithcing and code-mixing
4 Language shift, language loss, and language death
5 Language maintanence and language revival
6 Linguistic variables: vernacular, lingua franca, official language and standard language
7 Mid-term exam
8 Linguistic variables: pidgin and creole languages
9 National language, language reform and language planning
10 Regional and social varieties; Code Theory
11 The relation between language, gender and age
12 Ethnicity and social networks
13 Language change
14 Language variable: Style, context and register
15 Accomodation theory: speech convergence and speech divergence
16 Final exam
