Course Objective

This course aims at providing an introduction to the field of linguistics and drawing attention to the relation of linguistics to other disciplines of research, and providing information about the functions of language and sub-disciplines of linguistics. This course also aims at drawing attention to the origins of language, linguistic typology and introducing writing systems and alphabets.

1   Define language and linguistics
2   Explain the relation between and make a comparison between linguistics and other disciplines
3   Explain the main sub-fields of linguistics by making comparisons
4   Classify languages in terms of geneaology and in terms of their morphology
5   Discuss the views about the origins of languages by making comparisons
6   Explain the emergence and the development of writing systems
7   Explain the notion of alphabet and types of alphabets

1 What is Linguistics Definition and Methodological Principles of Linguistics. Foundation adn Developmemnt of Linguistics. Post-Saussurean Linguistics.
2 Synchronic (Descriptive) and Diachronic (Histroical) Linguistics. General and Specific Linguistics. Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.
3 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Literature, Psychology, Logic, Philosophy, Anthropology, Geography
4 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Physiology, Biophysics, Cognition, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Psychology, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, Physics, Cybernetics, Technology
5 Language and Thought, Language and the Mind. The semiological content of language.
6 Language and Society, Linguistic Societies, Language Varieties.
7 MID-TERM EXAM
8 Branches of Linguistics: Definition, areas of application and sub- branches
9 Languages of the World: Geneological and Morphological Typology, Languages of the World: Extinct Languages, Living Languages and Turkic Languages

11 Some Hypotheses about the emergence of language
