Course Objective

The aim of this course is to explain the development of folklore as a branch of science in the world and in Türkiye within the framework of its relationship with other branches of science, to evaluate folklore studies in Türkiye, to explain the stages of development of Turkish folklore, its sources and ways of utilizing these sources, to enable students to make a compilation study by applying research methods in the field.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain the emergence of folklore in relation to other sciences
2   To be able to summarize the history of folklore studies in Europe and Türkiye
3   To be able to recognize folklore / folk literature schools in Türkiye in terms of researchers and institutions
4   To be able to criticize the definitions of genre in folklore / folk literature and to make his own definition
5   To be able to define text-centered and context-centered folklore theories
6   To be able to explain the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage
7   To be able to make a compilation in the field using folklore research methods

Assessment Criteria

Apart from being successful in the midterm and final exams, students taking the course are expected to make a compilation on a subject using the research methods and techniques of folklore and present it at the end of the semester.
