Course Objective

It is aimed to equip students with knowledge, skills and competence about information technologies and basic concepts regarding software and hardware. In addition this course aims to teach how some utility programs, Office programs and Internet etc. can be used effectively.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain basic concepts regarding information technologies.
2   To be able to explain theoretical approaches regarding information technologies.
3   To be able to develop contents by using different programs (utilities, word processing programs, calculation / table / graphics programs, presentation programs, etc.) related to their field.
4   To be able to discuss the internet usage in education, safe internet usage and the effects of internet on individuals.
5   To be able to evaluate user behaviors about information usage and copyright issues.

Course Contents

1 Introduction of the basic concepts of information technologies
2 Explanation of computational thinking; problem solving concepts and approaches; explanation of algorithm and flow charts
3 Introduction to computer systems; Introduction to basic concepts of software and hardware, basics of operating systems, current operating systems, file management issues
4 Introduction to word processing programs and application of a word processing program (document preparation, writing, formatting, setting page options, designing).
5 Application in a word processing program (adding document pictures, figures, graphics, tables of contents) and designing an educational brochure on a subject related to their field
6 Desktop publishing, database management systems, web design issues
7 Introduction of presentation programs and introduction of File, insert, design menus of a presentation program
8 General Review, Course Evaluation, Mid-term Exam
9 Introduction of the usage of pictures, figures and graphics in a presentation program
10 Content development for a specific topic in a presentation program. Implementation of animations in a presentation program
11 Introduction of calculation / table / graphics programs and explanations of data, cells, rows, columns, graphics with one of these programs
12 Application of a calculation / table / graphics program, addition, subtraction, average, condition expressions, maximum, minimum expressions.
13 Explanation of Internet usage in education, communication and business alliance technologies, safe internet usage
14 Information ethics and copyrights; explanation of the effects of computer and internet on children / youth
