Course Objective

The main aim of this course is to understand the basic concepts of chemical kinetics, equilibrium, acid-bases, solubility equilibrium, chemical thermodynamics, electrochemistry and radioactivity and gain problem-solving skills.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. To be able to calculate different concentration units of a solution
2   2. To be able to calculate the speed of a chemical reaction
3   3. To apply Le-Chatelier principle on various reactions
4   4. To explain the conditions of precipitation
5   5. To be able to calculate the pH of all kinds of acid-base solutions
6   6. To understand the difference between galvanic and electrolytic cells
7   7. To be able to explain the difference between system and environment, endothermic and exothermic reactions together with thermodynamic laws
8   8. To understand nuclear reactions and factors affecting radioactivity

Course Contents

1 Solutions: Properties of solutions, units of concentrations in solutions and colligative properties
2 Chemical reactions and species (precipitation reactions, acid-base reactions, redox reactions)
3 Chemical kinetics: Reaction rate relationships, factors affecting reaction rate
4 Chemical Equilibrium: Equilibrium properties, equilibrium constant, factors effecting chemical equilibrium (Le-Chatelier principle)
5 Solubility equilibrium and solubility product: Precipitation conditions, equilibrium with complex ions
6 Acids-bases: Acid-base theories, strong acids and bases
7 Acids-Bases: Weak acids and bases, pH, pOH, acid-base balances Buffer solutions, acid-base titrations
8 General Review, Course Evaluation, Midterm Exam
9 Chemical thermodynamics: Three laws of thermodynamics and spontaneous events
10 Chemical thermodynamics: Entropy (DS) and Gibbs free energy (DG)
11 Electrochemistry: Oxidation-reduction reactions
12 Electrochemistry: Electrochemical batteries and electrolysis, Faraday laws
13 Nuclear Chemistry: Radioactivity, radioactive decay rate
14 Nuclear Chemistry: Core Reactions, Fission and Fusion
15 Final Exam
