Course Objective

With relate to everday life to consolidate, improve, complement shortage and show application of chemistry knowledge which is learned in elementary and secondary schools. Using the their chemical information, to improve skills of inqiry, problem solving and critical thinking. Enhancing students' knowledge to make experiments related to Chemistry concepts. Using the their chemical concepts, to improve skills of inquiry, problem solving and critical thinking.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding of scientific thinking and inquiring relation with daily life.
2   Have the basic knowledge on the concepts such as properties and states of matter, structure of atom, chemical bonds and molecular structure
3   Determine molecular geometries by using compound formulas
4   Write the formulas of ionic compound and Lewis s formula of compound
5   Balance chemical equations
6   Make chemical calculations
7   Solve gas problems
8   Acquire laboratuary skills.
9   Know the apparatus used in chemistry laboratories.
10   Evaluates data experiment.
11   Gains the ablity to express working as a team.
12   Applies and relates interdisciplinery knowledge.

1 Theory: The definition, branches, importance, effect on daily life of the chemistry and looking at the historical development of chemistry. Practice: Introduce to laboratory safety and working condition
2 Theory: Scientific methods, significant numbers, properties of matter Practice: To wash glasses in lab.
3 Theory: Atom and electronic structures of atoms, nucleus of atom, proton, neutron and electron, atomic theory, Modern atomic Theory Practice: Introduce to laboratory equipment and materials
4 Theory: Introduction of periodic table, Types and periodic properties of elements Practice: Preparation and concentrations of solutions
5 Theory: Ionization Energies, electronegativity, atomic radius, electron affinities Practice: The flame tests
6 Theory:Introduction of chemical bonds, Lewis structures of molecules, formal charge Practice: Conductivity Experiment
7 Theory: Ionic bond, covalent bond, intermolecular forces of attraction Practice: Solubility experiment
8 Course overview, evaluation, and midterm exam
9 Theory: Molecular geometry, Hybridization and hybrid orbital Practice: Three dimensional design studies and showing of molecular geometry

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The homeworks will be assessed by directly adding to the mid-term scores. The exam dates will be indicated in the lesson plan. As the exam dates become definite, the previously announced dates may change.

Assessment Criteria

1. The basic principals of chemistry, the laws of chemistry will be assessed by exams, homeworks, portfolios and projects.

1. It is obligated to continue to at least 70% of lessons .
2. Every trial to copying will be finalized with disciplinary proceedings.
3. The instructor has right to make quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
