Course Objective

The objective of this course is to introduce and help students comprehend the topics of basic astronomy.

1   Understands the role and significance of astronomy within science
2   Comprehends the history and tools of astronomy
3   Demonstrates knowledge of structure and physical movements of Earth, Sun, and Moon.
4   Comprehends the theories of formation of universe and solar system
5   Comprehends the development and structure of space technologies
6   Develops the questioning and higher order thinking skills about astronomy topics

2 Our worlds as a planet: EARTH
3 The structure of the sun and the solar system, the Kepler s laws
4 The inner, earth-like planets
5 Giant and gas planets
6 The small bodies of the solar system
7 Meeting-Course introduction The meaning of astronomy HW1: Moon observation for a month and drawing its shape every other third day.
8 The meaning of astronomy, basic astoronmy concepts, astronomical units. HW2: Short biography of Islamic period Turkish scientists with their contributions to astronomy
9 Fields of astronomy, historical development of astronomy.
10 Contribution of different cultures to astronomy, tools of astronomy.
11 Solar system, history of solar system models.
12 Motions of sun, earth, and moon.
13 Keppler s law, time-calendar, seasons.
14 Course overview, evaluation, and midterm exam
15 Elements of solar system, stars, sun as a star.
16 Space reference system, constellations, galaxies, milky way galaxy.
17 The universe, structure of the universe, formation of the universe, history of universe models.
