Course Objective

Learning basic concepts about sociology; comprehend basic sociological theories for education and the relation between education and social institutions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to explain the basic concepts of sociology.
2   Summarize the educational views of the pioneers of sociology.
3   Understand the basic sociological theories.
4   Analyze the relationship between social institutions and education.
5   Comprehend the relationship between culture and education.
6   Be able to explain the relationship between socialization, social change and education.
7   Get knowledge about the development of sociology and the educational sociology in Türkiye

1 Meeting with students and introducing the course.
2 Basic concepts of sociology: society, social structure, social phenomena, social events, etc.
3 Pioneers of sociology: Ibn-i Haldun, A. Comte and E. Durkheim's educational views.
4 Pioneers of sociology: M. Weber, K. Marx et al. educational views.
5 Basic sociological theories: education in terms of functionalism and structuralism.
6 Basic sociological theories: education in terms of phenomenology, ethnomethodology and symbolic interactionism.
7 Education in terms of conflict doctrine and critical theory.
8 Genaral recapitulation Midterm Exam
9 Socialization, social change and education.
10 Social mobility, social stratification and education.
11 Social institutions (family, religion) and education
12 Social institutions (economy, politics) and education
13 Culture and education; school as a social, cultural, moral system and a community.
14 The development of sociology and the educational sociology in Türkiye (Ziya Gökalp, Ismail Hakkı Baltacıoğlu, Nurettin Topçu, Mümtaz Turhan vd.)
