Course Objective

Purpose of this course is to evaluate change and developments happened in Turkey in institutional, political and cultural arena from the Ottomans till today.

1   1.Knows the political structure in the Ottoman Turkey.
2   2.Knows the requirement of political and institutional change in the Ottoman Empire
3   3.Knows rising and institutionalization of nation state.
4   4.Comprehends political and institutional changes that emerge with the understanding of nation state.
5   5.Evaluates the political structure and change in Turkey.

1 General overview on the Political and Institutional Structure of Classical Era Ottoman Empire.
2 Impact of the West and the first Modernization attempts. The Tulip Era.
3 Modernization Works in Institutions after the Tulip Era
4 18. Century Reformation Works and Results
5 Reformation Attempts and Results from the New Order to Tanzimat.
6 Announcement of the Tanzimat Edict.
7 Announcements and Implications of the first and second Constitutionalist Era.
8 Midterm Exam
9 Impact of the Reform Acts on Educational Policies and Educational Institutes in the Ottoman Empire.
10 Rising of the Nation State and Institutional Settlement.
11 Transition from the Sultanate to the Republic.
12 New Institutional Organizations After the End of Khilafah Era.
13 Impact of the Political Change in Turkey on Education and Educational Institutions.
14 Transition to Democracy. Turkey After 1950.
15 Final Exam.
