Course Objective

The objective of this course is to exhibit the explicit and/or implicit relationships between language and gender; challenge sterotypical gender roles which are expressed and sustained by language in the society within the feminist linguistics framework and have the learners to build up a critical view on the issue and gain insight to conduct research, analyse and discuss their findings

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To point out the relationship between language and gender in general,
2   To explain feminist theory, different approaches to the relationship between gender and language and basic terms briefly
3   To explain explicit and/or implicit gender roles in language using the prespective of feminist linguistics
4   To question the relationship between language, gender, society, and culture within the prespective of feminist linguistics
5   To question the sexist stereotypes in Turkish society and culture within the prespective of feminist linguistics
6   To make research on explicit and/or implicit gender ideology in different genres within the prespective of feminist linguistics and write a paper on it.

9 Awareness on the relationship between language and gender: changes in languages
10 The effects of some factors such as status, power and age on the relationship between language and gender
11 The relationship between language and gender and different institutions
