Course Objective

To acquire basic theoretical knowledge prerequisite for music composition.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Can state the basic concepts of music theory.
2   Can apply in various measure units and different keys.
3   Can analyze interval structures within melodic structures.
4   Can identify different chord structures and non-chord tones.
5   Can explain basic music terms.

1 Dominant 7th chord and its inversions
2 Dominant 7th chord and its inversions (continued)
3 Other 7th chords: Major, minor, diminished, half diminished 7th chords.
4 Inversions of other 7th chords.
5 Non-harmonic tones: passing tone, neighbor tone, appoggiatura, suspention, anticipation, etc.
6 Non-harmonic tones (continued)
7 Church modes
8 Midterm Exam
9 Other modes: pentatonic, octatonic and synthetic modes.
10 Transposition
11 Modulation
12 Irregular measure structures, basic rhythmical structures and grouping.
13 Rhythm exercises in various measure structures
14 Transposition exercises with various keys
15 Final
