Course Objective

To learn the characteristics of geriatric patients, the social and behavioral aspects of aging, the general medical aspects of aging, and the pathology, prevention and treatment of oral diseases in the elderly.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Discusses the demographic information of the elderly population and the epidemiology of aging
2   Defines the general characteristics of geriatric patients.
3   Recognize the changes seen in clinical examination in elderly individuals.
4   Defines the relevance of these changes to dentistry.
5   Makes appropriate treatment plans for geriatric patients

4 Functions of saliva and related diseases in geriatric patients
5 Psychiatric approach to geriatric patients
6 Communication and oral diagnosis in geriatric patients
7 Dental approach in individuals with limited mouth opening
8 Rational drug use in the elderly
9 Difficulties and solutions in dental treatment in geriatric and disabled patients
10 Periodontal diseases in geriatric patients
11 Endodontic treatment approaches in geriatric patients
12 Conservative dental treatment in geriatric patients
13 Treatment approach in geriatric patients using complete and partial dentures
14 Treatment approach in patients using fixed partial dentures
