Course Objective

To learn adhesives and composite resin classifications, infection control.
To prepare students preclinically by preparing restorations on extracted teeth.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have knowledge about adhesive systems.
2   Have knowledge about composite resins.
3   Recognizes the tools and materials used, learns the finishing and polishing processes of restorations.
4   Understands pin amalgam restorations, metal, composite, ceramic inlays and onlay restorations and laminate restorations, indications for construction, contraindications and importance.
5   Understands the reasons for the failure of restorations and learns what to do to minimize the failure.

1 Clinical and radiographic diagnosis of caries
2 Tooth vitality test
3 Determination of caries activity
4 DMFT, DMFS analysis
5 Evaluation of bacterial plaque
6 Removal of bacterial plaque from the tooth surface by chemical and mechanical methods
7 Individual caries prophylaxis applications
8 Fluoride gel and varnish applications for caries-active adult patients
9 Evaluation and regulation of the anticariogenic diet for caries-active adult patients
10 Evaluation of saliva quality and salivary flow rate
11 Oral hygiene education and motivation
12 General evaluation of gingival health
13 Treatment of dentin sensitivity with topical agents
14 Clinical and radiological evaluation of defective restorations
15 Evaluation of discoloration and polish level on existing restorations
16 Evaluation of enamel cracks on the tooth surface with a light device
17 Evaluation of tooth discoloration
18 Color determination with button technique in anterior aesthetic composite resin restorations

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should be able to define adhesive systems.
2. The student should be able to define composite resins.
3. The student should be able to describe the tools and materials used, describe the finishing and polishing processes of restorations.
4. The student should be able to define pin amalgam restorations, metal, composite, ceramic inlays and onlay restorations and laminate restorations, and their indications and contraindications for construction.
5. The student should be able to explain the reasons for failure of restorations and explain what to do to minimize failure.
