Course Objective

The students will understand the biochemical properties of teeth and mouth tisuues and biochemical mechanisms related to oral and dental health and diseases. Furthermore, they will be able to evaluate the results of biochemical tests in various disease states.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the biochemical properties of connective tissue, cartilage and bone tissue with special emphasis on dentin tissue
2   To understand the biochemical content and properties of saliva and to be able to explain the effect of saliva to oral health
3   To be able to explain the biochemical content of toothpastes and the effects on oral health
4   To be able to explain fluorine biochemistry and its importance for oral health
5   To be able to explain the effects of systemic diseases on oral biochemist
6   To be able to define biochemical parameters related to dentistry, to correlate them with the laboratory and diseases
7   To be able to clinically interpret laboratory tests and biochemical biomarkers in terms of various disease states

4 Biochemistry of body fluids and saliva
5 Electrolyte and fluid balance
6 Acid-Base Balance and its regulation
7 Biochemical parameters in diagnosis and monitoring of disease: Hepatic and renal biomarkers
8 Biochemical parameters in diagnosis and monitoring of disease: Atherosclerosis and cardiac biomarkers
9 Biochemical parameters in diagnosis and monitoring of disease: Hemogram and coagulation
10 Biochemical parameters in diagnosis and monitoring of disease: Plasma proteins and tumor markers
11 Systemic diseases and oral health
12 Preanalytical and postanalytical factors that effect biochemical test results
