General Description

History

Department of Psychology at the Institute of Social Sciences, Dokuz Eylul University has started to accept students into its master degree program with thesis in 2013-2014 academic years. Master degree program in Psychology is based on scientific research and practice-oriented curriculum. The aim of the program is to help students to acquire skills, experience and specialized knowledge beyond the students basic knowledge of psychology, to produce information by following up the current literature and research findings, to transfer and apply effectively the information to related persons/organizations. The medium of education is Turkish and the master program consists of compulsory courses about scientific research and methods and elective courses oriented towards sub-field of clinical psychology.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Psychology Master Program targets students to have detailed and deep theoretical knowledge on the concepts, theories and approaches needed and related to sub-fields of psychology interested by students beyond BA education and also to gain necessary skills and experience in order to apply and adjust the information into the related field of psychology. Besides, psychologists are aimed to master the research methods used in the field and to be able to apply and adjust them, to produce information through them, to follow and evaluate international literature, to adapt this knowledge by being aware of current situations, and to have ethical sensitivity necessary during research and practice. Education program consists of scientific research and methods, obligatory courses on statistics, and specific and elective courses related to the sub-field of clinical psychology.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To be able to describe basic concepts and terms related to the field of clinical psychology and the history and recent developments in that field.
2   To be able to discuss the strong and weak aspects by through comprehension of the historical and current approaches and perspectives in the field of clinical psychology.
3   To have knowledge about the assumptions of the basic theoretical approaches and perspectives in the field of clinical psychology, to be able to compare and contrast these theories, to express their similarities and differences, as well as their contributions and limitations.
4   To have knowledge about the application aspect of clinical psychology, be aware of the deficiencies and eliminate them by using various methods and tools.
5   To have the ability to know and apply the theoretical fundamentals and techniques of Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy.
6   To be able to follow the scientific developments in clinical psychology in Turkey and around the world by the help of scientific literature, keep the knowledge up to date, and be able to make an effective expression by compiling knowledge at different levels.
7   To have knowledge about quantitative and qualitative research methods, to be able to design a research, choose an analysis method, collect data, interpret and report findings in order to conduct scientific research in the field of clinical psychology.
8   To be able to follow and examine scientific activities such as scientific articles, oral/poster presentations related to the field of clinical psychology and apply the knowledge gained by preparing similar activities individually or as a group when necessary.
9   To be able to recognize the similarities and differences of those who are different from themselves on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnic group, language, religion, etc., to be self-critical about their own opinions and open to new ideas.
10   To have awareness and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and social events and problems and to be able to make explanations and offer solutions based on the theoretical and applied field.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Program s compulsory and elective and courses (53 ECTS), field study (4 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
