Course Objective

To gain the ability to analyze the basic concepts of business, the development process of business and the interaction of the business with the environmental elements.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the basic concepts and principles of business administration
2   Classify business types and properties
3   Be able to explain the processes in which the enterprises are included in the business phase starting from the establishment phase
4   To be able to analyze internal and external environment elements and business purposes of the operator within this scope
5   To be able to interpret current developments in business.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Development of Science and Business I The concept and characteristics of science are explained. The world's first businesses and the development of business are explained.
2 Development of Business II (Before and After the Industrial Revolution) Production in pre-industrial societies is explained. The effects of the industrial revolution and how business was structured under the influence of Taylor (Scientific Management) are explained.
3 Globalization and the Change in the Understanding of Business, Modern Definition of Business and Subjects of Business Science Globalization and its effects are explained. The change of businesses with globalization is explained. A current business definition is made and the subjects that business science is interested in are included.
4 The Concept of Need, Classification of Needs, Product, Good, Service and Benefit, Fighting Against Addiction. The concept of need is explained and classified. The concepts of Product, Good, Service and Benefit are explained. Information is given about their types. Information is provided about the concept of addiction, its types and methods of fighting it.
5 Factors of Production, Objectives of Business Management and Social Responsibility Factors of production are explained in two sections, classical and modern. Profit making, growth and social responsibility issues are explained.
6 Business Environment, Economic Systems, Competition and Intermediaries The macro, meso and micro environmental elements of the business are explained. Economic systems are explained and compared. The concept of competitors and types of competition are examined.
7 Productivity, Efficiency and Economy Total and partial physical efficiency concepts and efficiency formulas are examined. The concepts of efficiency and economy are conveyed with examples.
8 Classification of Businesses Classification of businesses and their characteristics are explained according to various criteria. The mutual advantages of SMEs and large businesses are discussed.
9 Businesses Growth I Within the scope of internal and external growth, horizontal and vertical growth, holding, consortium, gentleman's agreement, cartel, trust etc. growth types are examined.
10 Businesses Growth II Types of external growth are examined. Types such as outsourcing, benchmarking and management agreements are examined.
11 Businesses Growth III Acquisitions and joint investments are examined as types of external growth.
12 Investment Concept, Investment Types and Tourism Investments Planning, micro and macro investment are explained. Gross-net and real-financial investment are explained.
13 Investment and Capital Budgeting, Investment Decisions and Budget Investment budget and capital budget are explained. The processes in making investment decisions are explained. The concept and types of investment projects are examined.
14 Costs and Profitability Analysis in Businesses Basic cost types are explained (fixed, variable, semi-fixed, semi-variable). Break-even point is explained graphically. In addition, calculation examples are given by formula.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1.Midterm Exam: Mid-term exam covers the topics examined in the course and weekly assignments (40%).
2.Final Exam: Final exam covers all subjects in the course content. Students are also responsible for the discussion, practice and case studies (60%).

Assessment Criteria

Exam papers will be evaluated regarding the level of understanding, as well as defining the causality between the basic concepts and issues of the lecture, ability of giving examples and analytical thought, and using relevant terminology.
