Course Objective

The main aim of this course is to deal with ethic concept, the theoretical framework of ethic concept and creating understanding the effect of unethical behoviours on the society and also to understand the ethic and tourism relationship and the current scope of this concept with concrete examples.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to describe ethic concept and the related theoretical perspective.
2   The relationship of tourism and ethic, to be able to explain the related concepts
3   To be able to know the Global Code of Ethics and analyse the related topics in the current world examples.
4   To be able to have background enabling the creation of ideas for the sustainable applications of tourism ethics.

1 Philosophical thinking and moral philosophy The concept of philosophy, the development of philosophy, great philosophers, the concepts of ethics and morals, the relationship between ethics and philosophy
2 Introduction to ethics, theories and perspectives The concepts of ethics and emic, normative and non-normative ethical theories, their reflections on modern business decisions
3 Types of ethics Individual ethics, business ethics, organizational ethics, corporate ethics, managerial ethics, professional ethics
4 Ethical codes and behaviors he concept of ethical codes, globalization and ethical codes, the relationship between behavior and ethical codes
5 Sources of ethics Culture, norms, values, demographic structure, standards, and the state
6 Ethical dilemmas and corruption Approaches to ethical dilemmas and areas of corruption
7 Ethical issues related to digitalization and artificial intelligence Ethical rules on digital platforms, personal data protection, the European Digital Services Act, Ethics Guidelines for trustworthy AI
8 Ethics and social responsibility as organizational culture The concept of social responsibility, its development, dimensions and ethical codes
9 Ethics in the tourism industry Ethics from the perspective of actors in the tourism industry (Investors, Operators, Employees)

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Midterm Exam: Midterm exam encompasses the subjects covered in lectures as well as weekly assignments (40%).
2. Final Exam: The exam encompasses all the subjects covered throughout the semester, as well as in-class discussions, applications and case studies (60%).

Assessment Criteria

Exam papers will be evaluated regarding the level of understanding, as well as defining the causality between the basic concepts and issues of the lecture, ability of giving examples and analytical thought, and using relevant terminology.

1. It is obligatory to attend at least 70% of the classes
