Course Objective

To provide information about the development of leisure and recreation concepts and to provide competence in planning, management and implementation for modern examples.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Time Concept Different definitions of time are made. Definitions of Aristotle, Heidegger, Kant, Newton and Eistein are discussed.
2 Time Management and Types Principles of time management and effective use are explained. Real, perceived (psychological), biological and economic (administrative) time types are discussed. Concepts of working time, non-working time, free time and leisure are discussed.
3 Development of the Concept of Leisure (Before the Industrial Revolution) How the concept of leisure and recreational activities were structured in the Sumerians, Egypt, Babylon, Olympics, Herodotus, Marco Polo, Grand Tour and Renaissance are explained.
4 Development of the Concept of Leisure (After the Industrial Revolution) The effects of the extension of average life expectancy, the increase in free time (shortening of working hours) and the increase in purchasing power (luxury consumption-allocated share rates) are explained.
5 Subjects of Recreation and Olympics The phenomena that can be the subject of recreation are explained. The place of the Olympic games in history, their relationship with recreation and their effects are examined
6 What is WLO (World Leisure Organization) , Definition and Basic Features of Recreation Information is given about the activities and current actions of the WLO. The concept of recreation is defined. Flexibility, voluntariness, universality, etc. The features are discussed.
7 Information Society and the Relationship between Leisure and Recreation The Relationship Between Information Society and Leisure and Recreation is explained.
8 Classification of Recreation Types, Relationship Between Games and Recreation Recreational types such as rest, culture, sports, social, etc. are examined. The relationship between the concept of games, digital games and recreational activities is examined. These relationships are explained through sample digital games.
9 Relationship between Recreation and Innovation, Toys and Various Tools, Recreational Therapy Innovative recreation centers and activity types are examined. The value that toys and various recreational tools add to recreational activities is explained. Recreational therapy activities and the characteristics of recreational therapy are explained with different examples from around the world.
10 Theme Parks and Recreation Theme parks that are important in the international arena are discussed. Recreational areas and activities designed in these theme parks are examined.
11 Relationship between History, Technology and Underground in Recreation Recreational activities carried out in historical areas, the effect of technology on recreational areas and recreational activities, and the use of some unused underground galleries for recreational purposes are conveyed.
12 Marketing of Recreational Activities and Recreation Planning I Digital marketing of recreational activities is explained. The basic principles of recreation planning are explained and qualified recreation plan examples are examined.
13 Recreation Planning II and Tourist Types Relationship Between Recreation The details of the London recreation plan are examined. The types and characteristics of tourists are explained and the relationship between these types and recreation demand is emphasized.
14 Tourism Types, Tourism Demand and Relationship Between Recreation The types of tourism and the structure of recreational activities are discussed. In addition, the interaction between tourism demand and recreation is analyzed.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods
1. Midterm Exam: Midterm exam encompasses the subjects covered in lectures
as well as weekly assignments (40%)
2. Final Exam: The exam encompasses all the subjects covered throughout
the semester, as well as in-class discussions, applications and case
studies (60%)

Assessment Criteria

Exam papers will be evaluated regarding the level of understanding, as well as defining the causality between the basic concepts and issues of the lecture, ability of giving examples and analytical thought, and using relevant terminology.
