Course Objective

The objective of this course is to develop an understanding of the diversity strategies, practices and discourses that contribute to organizations and communities as well as explain the impact of cultural, religious, ethnic, age, sexual and disabled diversity on personal, group and organizational effectiveness from both a leadership, management and employee perspective in tourism.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to define the meaning and importance of diversity concept for tourism
2   to understand the guiding concepts of diversity in a psychological and sociological study of diversity
3   to discuss the major debates in social science concerning the study of diversity
4   to provide real life examples for the role of diversity, equality and inclusion on tourism enterprises
5   to explain the dominant theoretical paradigms utilized by scholars to understand diversity discourse and practices in tourism

Course Contents

1 Introduction: Theorising and managing diversity and inclusion in the global workplace To learn the concepts of diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace, to understand the need for managing differences.
2 Sociological, psychological and socio-psychological perspectives on diversity To learn how the concept of difference is perceived by different disciplines, to explore the theoretical background of the subject.
3 Leadership and diversity management in a global context To explain the importance of leadership and difference management in a global context
4 Policies and practices of diversity management in the workplace: Examples from Tourism and Hospitality Industry Case Studies -1
5 Policies and practices of diversity management in the workplace: Examples from Tourism and Hospitality Industry Case Studies -2
6 Gender equality in the workplace To understand the importance of gender equality in the workplace
7 Race and ethnicity in the workplace To be able to correctly understand the concepts of race and ethnicity
8 Age diversity in the workplace To be able to analyze the effects of age differences in the workplace in a positive way
9 Disabled persons in the workplace To understand what can be done for disabled employees in the workplace
10 Religious diversity in the workplace To be able to analyze the effects of religious differences in the workplace in a positive way
11 Sexual minorities in the workplace To obtain information about sexual minorities and sexual orientation issues in the workplace

Assessment Criteria

1-Students will learn key concepts and approaches in analyzing diversity management in the workplace.
2-Students will discuss the role and reflection of diversity management in the field of tourism.
3-Students will present their knowledge about diversity management in tourism with mid-term and final exams.
4-The topic, content and principles of weekly class readings will be announced in the beginning of the course.
