Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to focus on processes and approaches of training & development, performance and career management to advance students in human resource management.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the purpose and process of orientation programs and training.
2   Critically evaluate steps and techniques in the training process.
3   Describe and illustrate how to identify training and development requirements.
4   Develop an appropriate performance appraisal system.
5   Explain the employee s, manager s and employer s career development roles.
6   Develop oral/written communication skills; articulate and defend his/her position.
7   Develop and enhance the essential interpersonal skills to be an effective team member.

Assessment Criteria

1. Students will describe the five on- and off-the-job development techniques.
2. They will develop an orientation check list.
3. Students will develop, evaluate, and administer at least four performance appraisal tools.
4. They will perform an effective appraisal interview.
5. Students will discuss how to make a new subordinate s first assignment more meaningful.
6. They will develop career maps.
