Course Objective

This course aims to teach students the skills and techniques necessary for writing academic papers. Students will learn how to conduct academic research, combine their own ideas and arguments with sources, and how to quote, paraphrase and summarize information from other works. As a result, students will be able to prepare their assigned writing tasks and final-year research projects.

Course Contents

1 Introduction and Course Plan
2 The basics of academic writing: Identifying information needs and effectively utilizing information from sources
3 The basics of academic writing: Choosing a research topic and narrowing down the research topic
4 Reading: developing critical approaches; Doing research
5 Developing an argument based on readings; Identifying relationships between sources and summarizing them to support the main argument.
6 APA; Summarising and paraphrasing; References and Quotations
7 The thesis statement, paper outline, extended abstract with references
8 Midterm exam: Paper outline and extended abstract submission
9 Initial literature review: hints, tips and techniques.
10 Writing the development section of the article, building arguments and doing analysis
11 Working on the first completed draft: Academic style and tone in writing, editing and polishing
12 Submission of the first drafts of the papers; evaluating the students' ability to combine theoretical knowledge with analytical skills through their papers
13 Submission of the research articles.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The courses include both theoretical knowledge and practical applications. They will be conducted face-to-face/online and interactively. Students are expected to come to class having read and/or written the assigned texts selected by the instructor and to participate in in-class activities and discussions. Additionally, they are required to submit research-based assignments within the given deadlines throughout the semester.

Assessment Criteria

1. There will be one midterm exam, an assignment or presentation to be completed during the semester and a final exam.
2. Students are expected to read the assigned texts and actively participate in class discussions. They will also be required to submit their research and practice-based assignments, either individually or in groups, by the specified deadlines.
