Course Objective

To help students in dialogic approaching to many discussions about the definition of knowledge, its areas, its sources and about how to gain these knowledge which are constitute epistemological background of Islamic philosophy and its sources. From this point, to reveal an understanding and an awareness of that there is an epistemological dimension in research which were done about Islamic philosophy, that were generally on being and specifically on what is core reality of things. To create sufficient knowledge about main principles of epistemology that examined in those writings on Reason, Nafs, Logic, and Classification of Sciences.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   They will learn the knowledge theory is one of the problematic areas of Islamic philosophy.
2   They will see the close relation between the knowledge theory and some issues and terms mentioned in the books that were written on reason, Nafs, Logic and classification of sciences.
3   They will have enough information and awareness about the relation that was built between the understanding of philosophical knowledge and the understanding of Kalamî/Religious knowledge.
4   They will learn the basic approaches of Islamic philosophers to the knowledge specifically of Ishraw and Peripatetic Islamic philosophers.
5   They will learn the discussions about occurring knowledge and presence knowledge.

Course Contents

1 The knowledge theory in Islamic philosophy, and its source: Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus.
2 Discussions about the knowledge theory in Islimic philosophy: Peripatetics, Ishraq, Kalamî, and Tasavvufî(Sufism)
3 The definition of knowledge in Islamic philosophy and its boundaries.
4 The areas and sources of knowledge and the ways of getting it.
5 The logical and philosophical first analytics, and second analytics.
6 The universal concepts: species and types.
7 The relation of subject-object: the union of knowledge and knowledgeable.
8 The classes of knowledge: imagination and confirmation, requisite and Kesbî, emotional and rational knowledge, actual and factual knowledge, etc.
9 Occurring knowledge and presence knowledge.
10 Instinctual knowledge and enlightenment.
11 The truth value of knowledge.
12 The criteria of truth about knowledge.
13 Knowledge and categories.

The students can improve their knowledge and abilities for understanding and practicing about the issues and problems of the knowledge theory that held in Islamic philosophy.

Assessment Criteria

The students will be assessed based on success in their mid-term and final exams along with their performance during the classes throughout the semester.
