Course Objective

To reach reliable sources about the structure of Islamic thought intellectually and scientifically; to study theological and philosophical thoughts objectively; to overcome dangerous reductionist views and simplifications that arise in several claims about Islamic thoughts; in this field, to gain historical, cultural, theological, philosophical and scientific broaden of view. Overall, to review every kind of schools and movements that that built Islamic thought and how they are founded, developed, the methods that they used, basic terms and views of them, and their theological and philosophical backgrounds; and finally to clarify what they mean for contemporary people of today's world.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The students will be learned how Islamic thought was born, its boundaries and its main subjects.
2   They will get to know the main schools of Islamic thought (Salaf, Kalam, Philosophy, Tasavvuf-sufism)
3   They will learn the process of these schools were born and developed and their methods.
4   They will be able to evaluate the relation between Salaf, Kalam, Tasavvuf(Sufism) and philosophy.
5   They will get reliable and strong information about Islamic thought.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The definition, main subjects, areas and the boundaries of Islamic thought.
2 The born and developing periods of Islamic thought.
3 The structure and originality of Islamic thought.
4 Islamic thought schools and the main sources that give information about them.
5 The born of rational thinking in Islam - The relation between rational thinking and Salafî thinking.
6 The Salafî Thought: its representers, periods it has had, knowledge and religious views of them.
7 The critics against Salafî thought. The born of Kalamî thought and its schools.
8 The method that used in Kalam and atomism. The relation of Kalam with Fıqh, philosophy and Tasavvuf(Sufism)
9 The born of Islamic philosophy, its developing process and its schools.
10 The peripatetic Islamic philosophy and its problems.
11 The ishraq philosophy and its problems.
12 The philosophy of Sufism and Irfân (lore) tradition: Wahdatul Shuhud, and Wahdatul Wucud.
13 The innovation(Ihya) and improvements movements in Islamic thought: Islamic modernism its effects and problems.

The students can approach analytically and critically to the knowledge that they have learned about these schools and thought movements, their foundation, developing periods and important stages the schools evolved, as well as to their methods, problems and their relations and links to each other. And the students could clarify what all these means to the contemporary people.

Assessment Criteria

The students will be assessed based on success in their mid-term and final exams along with their performance during the classes throughout the semester.
