Course Objective

Students are intended to learn about the current state of the international trade system and the WTO.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to evaluate the current state of the world trade system.
2   To be able to evaluate the usage of the current trade policy instruments
3   To be able to learn the purpose of the organization and functioning of the WTO.
4   To be able to evaluate the effects of WTO binding on Türkiye's foreign trade.
5   To be able to learn the multilateral trade agreements and sectoral exceptions of WTO.

1 Introduction and Basic Discussion on Method
2 International Economics, discussion of concepts related with international trade and the WTO
3 Reasons of trade: gain from the trade, free trade arguments, international specialization / efficient resource allocation
4 Free trade against protectionism: Protectionism arguments
5 Trade policy, trade policy instruments: tariffs / non-tariff measures
6 The main objective of the World Trade Organization, a historical overview: GATT to WTO
7 GATT / WTO's fundamental objectives: WTO protection mechanisms
8 Midterm
9 Dispute resolution mechanism of the WTO
10 Multilateral Trade Agreements: GATT, GATS, TRIPS
11 Industry Regulations: Agricultural Products, Textiles and Clothing
12 Trade and environment interaction
13 WTO and Türkiye; WTO and developing countries
