Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to examine how actors and acting are perceived within the framework of acting theorists in modernism and postmodernism periods.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding how acting theorists in the modern era approached actors and acting,
2   Being knowledgeable about the interactions among theorists and the debates they conducted,
3   Learning about the ideas concerning actors and acting that emerged in the postmodern era (after 1980),
4   Engaging in discussions about the 'what-ness' of acting and actors today,
5   Developing a theoretical framework related to generating new discussion topics and synthesizing ideas about acting and actors.

1 Informing about the general assessment of the first semester and the semester plan.
2 Perception of the actor as an artist in the modern era and the revolution of acting - Diderot and beyond.
3 According to acting theorists, acting - the actor and acting for Stanislavski and his tradition.
4 The actor and acting for Meyerhold and his tradition.
5 The actor and acting for Bertolt Brecht and his tradition.
6 The actor and acting in the extended influence of Stanislavski reaching America.
7 The actor and acting for Antonin Artaud and his tradition.
8 Midterm exam
9 The actor and acting for Grotowski and his tradition.
10 The actor and acting for Augusto Boal and his tradition.
11 The actor and acting for Richard Schechner and his tradition.
12 New explorations in acting in the post-modern era.
13 Seminar - Acting in the Postmodern Era.
