Course Objective

Ability to define linear and nonlinear problems in geophysics and to apply inverse solution methods (linear and nonlinear) in solving geophysical problems.

1 Data Classification in geophysics and definitions
2 Purpose of inversion methods in geophysics
3 Basic matrix operations (Matrix multiplication, matrix inversion and computer applications)
4 Solution of linear systems of equations with computers (Gauss Elimination, Gauss-Jordan, Cholesky decomposition methods)
5 Applications of linear equation systems in geophysics
6 Eigenvalue-eigenvector definitions. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Solution of Equation with SVD
7 Eigenvalue-eigenvector definitions. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Solution of Equation with SVD and applications in geophysics (Cont.)
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Least Squares Solution (L1, L2, L norm definitions and Benchmarks)
10 Least Squares Solution and applications in geophysics
11 Damped Least Squares Solution and applications in geophysics
