Course Objective

This course aims at understanding the evolution and classification of new settlements, new cities as a means and purpose, design principles of new cities, changes in implementations and policy, trends of modern planned city development in the period of industrialization and post - "new towns" and the current urban problems and planning approaches.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to explain the development and exchange of cities from past to present (pre-industrial, post-modernism - the period of postmodernism, post-globalization, etc.).
2   will be able to list developing and changing planning approaches and theories from the emergence of cities to present.
3   will be able to compare similar approaches and practices in Türkiye with examples of overseas.
4   will be able to interpret the formation of new cities, trends of modern planned urban development and current urbanization problems.
5   will be able to explain the emergence of new types of settlement at present and tomorrow's cities with the examples.

1 The city - urbanization - to become urbanized - urban planning, global metropolis and information city, to become urbanized and planning in Türkiye, identity of urban planner, overview about the changing traits of the planning. Urban design, transportation and cities, discourses on the new planning approach
2 Cities and urban planning in the process of modernization.
3 Cities and urban planning in the process of modernization. Homework topics will be handed out in this week
4 The social structure, cities and planning approaches of the period of Modernism and postmodernism.
5 Cities and Social Structure after The 21st Century
6 Globalization, city and planning in a globalized world, the world city phenomenon and appearance of urban space. Theories of global stratification.
7 Midterm Examination or homework.
8 Information society and the new economy
9 The concept of utopia and utopian cities from past to present.
10 The concept of utopia and utopian cities from past to present.
11 Cities of the future.
12 Cities of the future. Contemporary city development trends - (given as the assignment topic). Students will be required to submit their homeworks and present their studies briefly to each other

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures. Homeworks will be given to students and they will be asked to prepare their homeworks on the subjects given to them.
