Course Objective

In this course, it is aimed to learn, compare and apply the methods applied to obtain and interpret qualitative data that will be the basis for planning studies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, the students are expected 1. to learn the concepts of qualitative data and qualitative research
2   2. to list the qualitative methods
3   3. to interpret the different methods advantages and disadvantages
4   4. to analyse the methodological requirements by choosing the appropriate method over the samples
5   5. to apply a qualitative method with a sample study and report the results, and evaluate them in terms of generating data in the planning discipline.

1 - Course introduction - Discussion of Science, Research, Method, Qualitative concepts - Why is qualitative research needed in planning
2 - Determining the research problem, designing the research, choosing the qualitative research method
3 - Conceptual and methodological analysis of structured observation, questionnaire, structured interview, and experiment / quasi-experimental methods
4 - Field and Focus group research
5 - Participatory action research
6 - Content Analysis
7 - Mixed methods research
8 Comparison of methods, discussion, repetition, re-evaluation through examples
9 Midterm
10 Reporting in different methods Homework topics will be determined this week.
11 Determination of homework groups, examination of the chosen method and study area for assignments

Listing and Description are evaluated by the Midterm Evaluation. Analysis and Interpretation are evaluated by Homework. Interpretation, Analysis and Evaluation are evaluated by the Final Exam.

This course will be given through conference presentations and literature readings. Besides the midterm examinations, students will be required to prepare homework in the semester. Homework will be done in the form of group study.
