Course Objective

In this course, it's aimed to comprehend the qualifications related to environment and aesthetics, to analyze the philosophical and conceptual foundations of the factors that create or influence aesthetic perception, and to compare how the built and natural environment in an individual's aesthetic response is measured in theoretical and empirical approaches via international and national literature. In addition, in order to practically observe the impact of theoretical knowledge on environmental aesthetics on designing the urban areas, it's intended to make an implementation towards the discussions held during the semester.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures and the students will learn topics by attending the lectures. Students will be responsible for the preparation of homework assignments. Beside midterm, students will present their assignment presentations.

Assessment Criteria

Learning outcomes to be evaluated via midterm exam: define the concepts of environment and aesthetics (knowledge), explain the relationship of individual and environment with all the dimensions (comprehension)

Learning outcomes to be evaluated via assignments: clarify how the individual can evaluate the environment, nature or the spatial integrity through the aesthetic perception (comprehension), discuss the quality of the aesthetic values created in the design of living areas (comprehension)

Learning outcomes to be evaluated viafinal exam: discuss the quality of the aesthetic values created in the design of living areas (comprehension), analyse the fictional quality changed via the action of designing (analysis).

A midterm exam will be held throughout the semester and an assignment will be expected to be submitted. At assignment, student groups will be formed and a group work will be expected. In addition, a fiction will be given to measure the personal performance of the student in the homework. Therefore, the submitted assignment will be graded both through group work and individually. In the grade to be taken from the assignment, the group and individual grade rates will be given at the same level (50% each).

Course Policies and Rules

This course will be given through lectures, readings, researches and discussions. Students are expected to apply / design the knowledge they have acquired through theoretical explanations with an assignment topic.
