Course Objective

In the light of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was accepted by the UN after the social and humanitarian conditions brought by industrialization and the modern period from the 19th century, as well as the confusion and troubles caused by the two great world wars, the basic teachings of religions, the struggle for existence of religious communities and cultural interaction were reconsidered. efforts to address and make sense of it have emerged. In this context, to evaluate the articles directly or indirectly related to freedom of religion and conscience in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in terms of religions and the cultures in which they live; In this way, it aims to shed light on the resolution efforts on issues such as freedom of religion and belief, religious and cultural discrimination, and assimilation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of lecture, student could understand how freedom of religion and conscience is an area of freedom
2   The student evaluates the provisions on freedom of religion and conscience in international legal documents in terms of the basic teachings of living religions.
3   Comprehends the solutions to the problems faced by the members of various religions
4   Gain insight into issues between international law and religion
5   Gain insight into concepts and phenomena related to freedom of religion and conscience such as interreligious dialogue, Missionary work, Jihad, religion-state relations

7 Religious Minorities and their areas of freedom
8 Cultural Issues: Religious and cultural discrimination
9 Multicultural societies and areas of religious freedom
10 Social Issues: Fundamental rights such as health-education-work and religious discrimination
11 Globalization, inter-communal relations and tolerance limits to different religions
12 Islam and religious diversity: Freedom of religion and conscience in Islamic societies
13 Universal and social morality and religious freedoms
