Course Objective

Islamic tombs (turbah) as a grave structure are one of the valuable architectural heritages of the Islamic civilisation. In this class, the birth and developing process of the tomb buildings will have been examined and then some monumental tombs out of Türkiye and their main forms and features will have been introduced. The basic aims of the class to study about the building type of the religious architecture, and its historical-social function in which these buildings are getting gradually taken under protection by local and global organisations, such as One of the World Architectural Heritage The Taj Mahal and the other the Mausoleum of Khwaja Ahmed Yasawi.Also to make students realize the differences regarding architectural images and silhouettes of the tombs in Islamic World.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students learn the terminology related to the tomb buildings
2   They get information about funeral practices, the origin and spreading the tomb buildings
3   They meet some monumental tombs out of Türkiye and understand their importance in Islamic cultural heritage
4   They can explain the differences regarding main forms and appearances of the tomb buildings in Islamic world
5   They can comprehend the function and importance of the buildings in aspect of Islamic civilisation.

3 The funeral tradition in the period of the Prophet and examples of graves
4 The origin of tomb buildings in Islamic World and first examples of them
5 11th - 13th cent. Turkish political geography and Islamic tombs.
6 14th cent. The tombs in Central Asia and Iran lands
7 13th - 15th cent. The tombs in Indian sub-continent
8 Mid-term Exam
9 Timurids tombs: Mausoleum of Khwaja Ahmed Yasawi and Gur-i Mir
10 The Mughal Tombs: First examples
11 Nizamuddin Shrine and Humayun Tomb: form, function and meaning
12 Akbar tomb: the power of change
13 Taj Mahal: return to inners and crystallisation
14 Historical-cultural functions of tomb buildings in Islamic World
15 Final exam
