Course Objective

The aim of this course is to describe what discourse is, to discuss the basic concepts and approaches related to discourse analysis, and to understand how data is analyzed using different methods and theories using discourse analysis.

2   the student is expected to be able to explain the basic concepts used in discourse analysis with examples.
3   the student is expected to be able to discuss from what different aspects a discourse fragment can be analyzed.

5   the student is expected to be able to analyze and critique research articles that use the discourse analysis method using different theories and approaches.

1 Definition of discourse and related keywords
2 Context and its types; importance of context in communication
3 Text and textuality criteria;
4 Contextualization cues, discourse connectors:
5 Production of discourse: information structure (given information, new information)
6 Written and spoken language features;
7 Institutional discourse and its characteristics; examples from different institutional discourses
8 Mid-term exam
9 Analyzing discourse: transcribing spoken discourse
10 Conversational analysis
11 Speech act theory; conversational maxims, conversational implicatures
12 The production of discourse: Perspective-making; staging and representation of discourse structure
13 Data collection and sampling methods in the analysis of discourse
14 Analysis of data: review of various research articles in this regard
15 Application: the examination of data in line with a particular theory or approach
16 Final exam
