Course Objective

The aim of this course is to recall the normal structure and functions of tissues and organs related to hearing, balance and vision, to learn physical examination of ear, throat, nose and eyes and to grasp the diagnosis and treatment of common diseases related to them. Besides differential diagnosis of symptoms such as visual loss or red-eye, the students are expected to define the urgency level of symptoms related to ear-nose-throat and eyes, to perform the first interventions for any clinical emergency and in non-urgent cases, to learn when to refer the patient to any specialist physician.


   

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Perform routine otolaryngological examination
2   Manage a patient with epistaxis
3   Define symptoms and signs of otitis media and explain principles of treatment
4   Interpret the results of odiological tests used to diagnose hearing losses
5   Explain the etiopathogenesis, discuss diagnosis and treatment of adulthood ear diseases (otosclerosis, Meniere's disease, presbycusis).
6   Define symptoms and signs of salivary gland disease and explain principles of treatment
7   Define normal anatomic structure of the eye and explain the functions of the tissues
8   Perform a complete ophthalmic examination including visual acuity assessment, color-vision testing, visual field examination (confrontation), light reflex examination and direct ophthalmoscopy
9   Recognize ocular refractive principles, visual development and define refractive errors
10   Assess visual loss symptoms with proper differential diagnosis
11   Explain the etiopathogenesis, discuss differential diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment of red eye
12   Explain the etiopathogenesis, classify the types, discuss the importance and emergency treatment of glaucoma.
13   Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts
14   Discuss the personal, familial and public effects of low vision and causes of preventable blindness
15   Explain visual development and causes of amblyopia
16   Assessment of the eye-lids and anterior ocular structures with a pen-light
17   Explain the rules and importance of proper contact lens use

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The student's end of block grade:
25% of the end of task process evaluation grade average,
25% of the NÖKS grade,
0% of the interim achievement assessment,
50% of the theoretical exam grade
is calculated out of 100 (one hundred).

Assessment Criteria

In order for students to take the exam:
To have attended at least 70% of the theoretical activities,
It is necessary to have participated in at least 80% of the block applications and / or laboratory studies.
The application, laboratory and similar in-year studies related to the block must be done within the given periods.
Students who have not fulfilled all of these conditions must repeat that block or internship.

In order for the student's exam results to be valid:
In the end-of-task process evaluation, 60 (sixty) and above grades must be obtained from at least 70% of the number of tasks in the relevant block. Otherwise, the block is repeated.
In order to calculate the end of block grade; The average of the end of task evaluation must be 60 (sixty), and each of the NÖKS and theoretical evaluation grades must be at least 55 (fifty-five).
To be successful in the block, the block success grade must be at least 60 (sixty).
