Course Objective

The course "Interactive Art and Relationality" aims to teach students the theoretical foundations of interactive art and relational aesthetics, and to help them explore how these fields operate within social, cultural, and technological contexts. The course focuses on examining the dynamic interaction between the viewer and the artist, the role of participatory art projects, and their relationship to social change. Additionally, it discusses the role of digital technologies and new media art in the practice of interactive art, with the goal of developing students' creative thinking and project design skills.

1   Understand the historical development and theoretical foundations of interactive art and relational aesthetics.
2   Gain the ability to design projects involving audience participation.
3   Develop the ability to design and manage levels of participation in creative processes.
4   Analyze the social impact of interactive art.

Course Contents

1 1. Introduction and Key Concepts Defining the concepts of interactive art and relational aesthetics, the historical development of audience participation, and the place of relational aesthetics in art history.
2 2. Origins of Interactive Art The contributions of movements like Dada, Fluxus, and performance art to interactive art, early examples of participatory art, and strategies of audience engagement.
3 3. Relational Aesthetics Theory Main arguments from Nicolas Bourriaud's "Relational Aesthetics," the social and cultural contexts of relational art, and a comparison with traditional art.
4 4. Participatory Art Practices Analysis of participatory art projects, making the viewer part of the artwork, and strengthening dialogue between art and society.
5 5. Concepts of Space and Time The transformation of space in relational art, the continuity and temporality of the artwork, and the use of time as a medium.
6 6. Community-Based Art Projects Social impact of community-focused art projects, collaboration between artist, audience, and society, and case studies of examples.
7 7. Technology and Interactive Art The impact of digital technologies on interactive art, virtual reality, augmented reality, and interactive installations enhancing audience experience.
8 8. Relational Aesthetics and Critical Approaches Critiques of relational aesthetics, the commercialization of art, and reflections of relational aesthetics in contemporary art practices. Claire Bishop's critiques of relational aesthetics.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Theoretical foundations will be presented and discussed in various contexts, while students will be encouraged to design pattern projects and develop exhibition methods through examples based on their personal stories.

Continuity is essential, and the completion of practical work and assignments is required.
1. Complete the applications in a way that aligns with the context and demonstrates artistic competence within the target time frame.
2. Present/submit assignments and projects demonstrating the ability to use scientific research methods within the specified time.
