Course Objective

The aim of this course is to define the basic literary patterns used in German literature within the theoretical framework and to identify them in texts from different periods. The aim of the course is to develop students' ability to evaluate the concept of pattern in its historical and cultural contexts, to identify and interpret patterns in texts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defines the concept of literary motif and can distinguish it from other literary motifs (theme, topos, pattern, figure, etc.).
2   Have a command of motif theories and apply them in literary text analyses.
3   Recognise, classify and interpret motifs in texts from different periods of German literature.
4   Analyses the transformation of motifs in historical and cultural context.
5   Relates literary motifs to contemporary media, culture and social structures.
6   Develops original interpretations by synthesising theoretical and practical knowledge.
7   Expresses ideas clearly and coherently through academic presentation, discussion and written analysis.
