Course Objective

The aim of this course is to analyze the teaching of Medieval Turkish-Islamic history in secondary education from both content and pedagogical perspectives, and to critically evaluate textbooks, teaching materials, and instructional methods in light of contemporary approaches

1   1. Identifies key concepts and events of the Medieval Turkish-Islamic period 2   2. Analyzes the scope of this era in the national history curriculum 3   3. Critically evaluates the representation of the period in textbooks 4   4. Develops teaching strategies within pedagogical frameworks 5   5. Designs student-centered and inquiry-based instructional materials 6   6. Integrates the historical complexity of the era into teaching practices

Week Subject Description 1 Introduction to the course, objectives and relation to history education 2 Overview of Medieval Turkish-Islamic history 3 Teaching the Karakhanids, Ghaznavids, and Great Seljuks 4 Crusades, their impact on the Islamic world and teaching approaches 5 Turkish-Islamic principalities in Anatolia and social structures 6 Islamic thought and scientific contributions in the Middle Ages 7 Midterm Exam 8 Position of Medieval Turkish-Islamic history in the MEB curriculum 9 Critique of textbook narratives on the period 10 Examples of student-centered activities and materials 11 Use of visual and digital sources 12 Strategies for teaching complex concepts and events 13 Designing activities aligned with historical thinking skills 14 Relating medieval history to contemporary issues 15 Student presentations and teaching demonstrations 16 Final Exam
