Course Objective

To try to understand the relations between religion and the state in the modern world and to gain a competence to analyse the changes it brings about in the context of the relevant literature and to examine the history of developments in the world, the Turks, the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will have knowledge about the shaping of religion-state relations in different religious and cultural geographies.
2   Students will be able to analyze the main arrangements, different models and current debates on the relationship between religion and state in today's world.
3   Students understand how the relationship between religion and state has been shaped from past to present in the world and which breaks have been experienced in which periods.
4   Understands the models of religion-state relationship in the West and the Islamic world.
5   Students make detailed evaluations on freedom of religion and conscience
6   Understands the causes and consequences of the development of religion-state relations in Turkey

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Weekly topics are evaluated together after being re-summarised by the lecturer in the light of the students' previous readings, and students are also encouraged (as far as possible) to make short presentations on a topic of their choice during the semester. Inductive and deductive scientific methods will be used. Statistics will also be evaluated

40% midterm / homework, 60% final. Attendance to 70% of the lectures is compulsory. The instructor reserves the right to conduct practical exams. The grades from these exams will be added to the midterm and final exam grades.
