Course Objective

This course explores the function of narratological analysis in the appreciation of lifewriting narratives. By focusing on various modes of autobiographical discourse, the course examines how narrative components help configure narrative identities, and cultural agents. The students will also question the immanent ideology, aesthetic norms and power structures as reflected in autobiographies, memoirs and diaries. The course also considers the autobiographical turn in translation studies. Professional identity, competence, translator s decisions, multilingualism and migration will further be evaluated by the students with reference to translators autobiographies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand key narratological concepts and methods of criticism to apply narratological analysis to lifewriting narratives
2   Evaluate case studies of autobiographical narration in terms of power, ideology. agency, and competence.
3   Develop critical perspectives on the epistemological implications of autobiographical turn in translation studies.
4   Apply the theoretical acquisiton and practical insights gathered to translators lifewriting narratives.
5   Evaluate case studies of translators memoirs, diaries and autobiographies to probe such topics as translators emotions, translation skills, the management of translation process, self-translation, migration, and multilingualism.
