Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students a theoretical basis for the management of National Parks and other protected areas.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize the contemporary influences affecting environmental management to identify and apply the principles and practices associated with the management of National Parks and protected areas.
2   Describe the role of National Parks and protected areas and their value to the conservation of natural resources to discuss the roles and values of protected areas in the broader context of conservation.
3   Identify and apply the principles and practices associated with the management of National Parks and protected areas to discuss the need for the conservation management at a landscape level.
4   Describe available approaches to mange tourism in protected areas and how these approaches maximize benefits while limiting or eliminating the negative impacts of tourism to be able to discuss the benefits and costs of tourism in protected areas.
5   Identify stakeholders to assess the importance of working with community and the impact of National Parks and protected areas on neighboring communities

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Lecture: There will be three lecture sessions every week.
2. Discussion: During the lectures some discussion topics related to lecture's content will be offered to the students.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Midterm exam will cover the questions from the topics in the outline.
2. At the beginning of the term students will form groups and work together for term project. Term project should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced and APA format. The presentation should be no longer than 15 minutes. Grading of term project will be based on content, style and presentation.
3. A written assignment will be given. (In-class case studies)

7 Students use sources clearly to answer the questions
8 Students use online sources such as official web sites of national and/or marine parks
9 Students' assignments include answers of the relevant questions
10 Students use the time effectively during the assignment
11 Students submit their assignments on time.
12 Students do their assignments on the date assigned to them.

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
