Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide prospective teachers with an in-depth understanding of problem solving and problem posing processes, to understand the place of these processes in mathematics teaching, to learn about various problem types and solution strategies, and to reflect this information on classroom practices. In addition, it is aimed to provide the skills to evaluate mathematical problem solving and posing activities in light of current developments and to train prospective teachers as effective problem makers and solvers in the context of the middle school mathematics program.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explains the place and importance of problem solving in mathematics teaching.
2   Understands various problem types and problem-solving strategies.
3   Designs lessons that incorporate problem-solving activities.
4   Explains the steps involved in the problem-solving process.
5   Understands different instructional approaches to problem solving in mathematics education.
