Course Objective

The aim is for the teacher candidate to learn jazz history and harmony, to accompany any melody using modern jazz harmonization techniques, and to gain the ability to improvise on chords.

1   The student has general information about the history of jazz music.
2   The student, understands jazz music harmony and theory.
3   The student Knows the chord names in jazz music
4   The student can accompany and write accompaniment to unaccompanied works.
5   The student understands the relationships between jazz and classical music.

Course Contents

1 A general overview of the history of Jazz Music. An examination of the relationship between jazz harmony and classical harmony.
2 Sample improvisation exercise with chord sounds, chromatic approximation sounds, serial approximation sounds.
3 Harmonic progression in jazz music. Principles and rules.
4 Chord symbols in jazz music, open harmony technique.
5 Four-voice harmonization of a given melody. Principles and rules. Sample repertoire study.
6 Improvisation principles, chord sounds, chromatic approximation sounds, sequential approximation sounds, Major 6th, Minor 6th, Dominant 7th, Minor 7th, Extra 7th and Incomplete 7thPresentation (Teaching)
7 Sample improvisation exercise with chord sounds, chromatic approximation sounds, serial approximation sounds.Presentation (Teaching)
8 General repetition, course evaluation, Mid term exam.
9 Improvisation, delayed resolution, bichromatic approach, improvisation on a given melody.Presentation (Teaching)
10 Rhythm, 1/8 and 3/8 rhythmic shifting, use of triplets in 4/4 measure. Melodic decomposition. Sample work study.Presentation (Teaching)
