Course Objective

Acquisition of a diverse repertoire of children's songs, school music, and educational music, ability to arrange and perform practical piano accompaniments suitable for children's songs, development of skills in collaborative music-making, including ensemble awareness and group performance dynamics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to systematically identify the I (tonic), IV (subdominant), and V (dominant) degrees in any diatonic scale.
2   Competence in using inversion chords in piano accompaniment.
3   Ability to perform a song with both hands in rhythmically appropriate accompaniment, maintaining continuity without interruption.
4   Skill in applying secondary functions and altered chords within harmonic accompaniment.
5   bility to carry out a musical form analysis of a children's song, identifying its structural components.
6   Proficiency in conducting a harmonic analysis of a children's song, including chord functions and progressions.
7   Familiarity with various musical phrase structures and musical sentence patterns used in tonal music.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to accompaniment, its definition and purpose, and foundational knowledge necessary for beginning the course.
2 Repetition of root position chords that form the perfect cadence, followed by a related homework assignment.
3 Application examples of root position chords in simple songs.
4 The role of inversion chords in minimizing hand movement and making accompaniment more practical; developing the ability to perform accompaniments in different keys using primary triads.
5 Presentation of rhythmic patterns applicable to simple time signatures in accompaniment.
6 Application of meter changes in songs and their effect on accompaniment, practiced at the piano.
7 Performing accompaniment patterns in compound and irregular meters.
8 General review, Course evaluation, Midterm exam
9 Use of secondary functions and secondary dominants in accompaniment.
10 Adapting accompaniment style to match the character of the song.
11 Developing the ability to create appropriate accompaniments at first sight for a given song or folk tune on the piano.
12 Introduction to the concept of transposition; assigning related homework to practice transposition techniques.
13 Developing the ability to transpose up or down by a tone at sight; exercises focused on march-style accompaniments.
14 Review of assigned homework, correction of mistakes, and in-class piano performance of each student s work.
15 Final exam
