Course Objective

To teach advanced études and repertoire that support technical development in the viola playing process for pre-service music teachers, and to enhance their musical expression and interpretative skills in order to foster pedagogical competence.

Course Contents

1 Finger independence and acceleration exercises involving transitions across 1st to 5th positions.
2 Finger independence and acceleration exercises across 1st to 5th positions; combined bowing techniques including legato, détaché, martelé, staccato, and spiccato.
3 Continued finger and shifting exercises in 1st to 5th positions; combined bowing techniques (legato, détaché, martelé, staccato, spiccato).
4 Transition exercises into the 6th position; continued work on combined bowing techniques.
5 Consolidation exercises in the 6th position; related études and pieces; continued work on combined bowing techniques.
6 Ongoing technical studies and repertoire in the 6th position; application of combined bowing techniques
7 Continued consolidation of the 6th position through études and pieces; advanced bowing technique applications.
8 General Review/Course Evaluation/Mid-term Exam
9 Exercises involving transitions among 1st through 6th positions
10 Transition exercises between positions 1 to 6; étude studies incorporating legato, détaché, martelé, staccato, and spiccato.
11 Continued étude work with combined bowing techniques across positions 1 to 6.
12 Further technical and bowing studies; selection of national and international repertoire suitable for final exam level.
13 Repertoire practice of selected national and international works suitable for the final exam; continued étude work.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course is conducted through one-on-one practical instruction. Individual instrumental practice, observation, instructor feedback, listening to model performances, and guided repetition are employed to enhance students technical skills. In addition, students engage in self-assessment and peer feedback by reviewing recorded performances.
