Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the viola and develop fundamental technical and musical skills necessary for its performance. Through individual instruction, students will learn proper posture, bowing techniques, left-hand positioning, and coordination. The course also aims to cultivate critical thinking and self-discipline in practice routines, and to enable students to perform level-appropriate national and international repertoire with musical expression and technical accuracy.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Adopt a proper posture suitable for viola performance.
2   Understand and apply basic bowing techniques (détaché, legato).
3   Accurately place the left-hand fingers on the fingerboard.
4   Coordinate the use of both hands effectively.
5   Perform small-scale national and international pieces appropriate to their level.
6   Evaluate their own viola performance skills and knowledge with a critical perspective
7   Plan creative activities related to viola playing, appropriate to their level.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to the viola and its historical development. Adopting proper playing posture and correct instrument hold.
2 Correct posture and holding of both the viola and the bow; open string bowing exercises.
3 Open string bowing and string crossing exercises; left-hand finger placement on correct pitches.
4 Continued left-hand finger placement exercises on the fingerboard
5 Finger placement combined with coordinated use of both hands; one-octave scales, etudes, and simple pieces across two strings.
6 Continued practice of one-octave scales, etudes, and pieces across two strings.
7 Further development of the same repertoire and technical exercises.
8 General Review/Course Evaluation/Midterm Exam
9 Performance of two-octave scales and arpeggios in 1st position using détaché and legato bowing techniques.
10 Continued practice of two-octave scales and arpeggios with détaché and legato bowing.
11 Study of etudes covering all four strings, combining détaché and legato techniques; selection of national and international repertoire appropriate to the level.
12 Continued four-string etude and repertoire practice for exam preparation.
13 Continued development of selected national and international repertoire using combined bowing techniques.
14 Final rehearsal and performance preparation with appropriate pieces.
15 Final Exam
