Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to important story types and prominent writers in different periods of Turkish literature, and to provide them with the ability to examine and interpret selected stories using literary criticism methods. Students will be able to analyze the structural features, themes, characters, narrative techniques, the author's style and their relationship with literary movements. In addition, they will evaluate the historical, social and cultural contexts of the stories and gain the competence to deeply penetrate the texts by applying different critical approaches.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Explain the historical development and important periods of the story genre in Turkish literature.
2   2. Will be able to recognize the prominent story writers and their works of the Tanzimat, Servet-i Fünun, National Literature, Republic and later periods.
3   3. Will be able to analyze the structural features (plot, characters, time, place, narrator, etc.) of selected Turkish literature stories.
4   4. Will be able to identify and interpret the main themes and motifs in the stories examined.
5   5. Will be able to evaluate the psychological depth and social representations of the characters in the stories.
6   6. Will be able to identify different narrative techniques (point of view, internal monologue, stream of consciousness, etc.) used in stories and interpret their effects.
7   7. Will be able to analyze the authors' original styles and language use.
8   8. Will be able to relate the stories examined to the historical, social and cultural contexts of the period to which they belong.
